WHAT IS SPORTS MEDICINE?

We see the term thrown around alot, but what does it mean? Obviously it refers to specialists who care for athletes, but this is an oversimplification. Sports medicine physicians are experts at preventing and treating injuries in active people, including athletes, those who exercise for general fitness, and those who have physically demanding jobs or hobbies. Specialized training on how to care for these patients is important because the expectation is not simply to "make me feel better." They need to get back to a high level of performance and function. Accomplishing this requires a team of people including (but certainly not limited to) physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists.
